A scrap metal baler and a hydraulic shear solve different handling problems. A baler compresses suitable loose scrap into a bale. A shear reduces the length or section of material by cutting it. The right starting point depends on what arrives at the yard and what the next handler needs.
Start with the incoming material
List the typical and largest pieces separately. Thin offcuts and mixed loose scrap may fit a baling route when the selected chamber and loading method can accept them. Long beams, bulky structures or pieces that cannot be safely loaded may need cutting first. Material grade, wall thickness and contamination also matter; a machine name alone is not enough to decide.
Define the required output
Ask the receiving mill, trader or transport team whether it wants a compact bale, a maximum cut length or another form. A bale can simplify storage and shipment of suitable loose material. Shearing can produce shorter pieces for loading or subsequent processing. Some projects use both processes, but that sequence should be justified by actual material and buyer requirements.
Check the handling route
Sketch how scrap reaches the machine, how an operator loads it, and where the processed material exits. Consider excavator access, separation of grades, available floor area and truck loading. A solution that works on paper can be awkward if the site cannot feed or remove material consistently.

- What is the desired bale size or maximum cut length?
- How many tonnes arrive per shift, and how many shifts will run?
- Which grades must stay separate?
- What power supply and loading equipment are available?
