Good briquetting results begin before the chips enter a press. The feed material needs to be described and, where practical, sampled so the selected system can be assessed against real production conditions.
1. Are grades kept separate?
Different metals and alloys can have different handling and downstream requirements. Record whether the stream is a single grade or a changing mix. A buyer may also require separation to preserve material value.
2. What shape are the chips?
Short chips, fine particles and long stringy turnings can feed differently. Photographs and a representative sample are more useful than the word “chips” alone. Note any tendency to bridge in a hopper or wrap around equipment.
3. How much fluid is present?
Machining coolant or oil may affect collection and pressing. Describe whether the material is wet, drained or dried, and ask how any expressed fluid is handled. Do not assume a press replaces all upstream fluid management.
4. Are there hard contaminants?
Fasteners, tool fragments and other foreign objects should be identified before specifying equipment. Ask what separation or screening is appropriate for the actual stream.
5. What is the real production rate?
Record average and peak input by shift, plus how often the stream changes. A nominal hourly capacity should be checked against the selected material and operating schedule.
6. What output is acceptable?
Confirm the briquette dimensions, handling and receiving requirements. If possible, request a trial with representative material and document the results before fixing the final specification.
