Hydraulic Scrap Shear Inspection: A Practical Operator Checklist

Routine inspection helps operators notice obvious problems before cutting begins. This is a general planning checklist, not a substitute for the manual, local safety rules or a qualified technician’s instructions for a particular shear.

Before starting

Check that guards, access doors and emergency-stop devices are in the condition specified by the manufacturer. Clear the work zone of people and obstructions. Inspect the feed and discharge areas, and confirm the planned material is within the selected machine’s stated cutting envelope.

Look at wear and hydraulic condition

With the machine made safe according to the manual, look for blade damage, loose fasteners, abnormal wear and oil leaks. Check hydraulic oil level and any filter or temperature indications using the specified procedure. Do not touch or adjust a pressurized system without the required isolation steps.

During operation

Watch for a change in cutting sound, movement, cycle behavior or discharge. Stop and investigate abnormal operation rather than forcing material through. Keep a record of the feed type and any fault; a repeated issue may point to material preparation, blade condition or another maintenance need.

After the shift

Remove debris using the approved shutdown and isolation process. Note any leaks, wear or faults for the next operator. Follow the actual maintenance schedule for lubrication, blade work and hydraulic service.

  • Date, operator and machine model
  • Material type and unusual pieces
  • Guard, blade and hydraulic observations
  • Faults, corrective action and maintenance sign-off
