Look at the material presentation
An alligator shear is often considered for pieces that can be presented to its open cutting jaws in a controlled way. A gantry shear uses a different feed and hold-down arrangement that may suit a larger or more continuous scrap flow. Exact suitability depends on material section, grade, shape and the machine configuration; neither category should be assumed to accept every piece of scrap.
Define the cut requirement
State the longest incoming piece and the maximum acceptable outgoing length. Include solid sections, hollow sections and bundles separately. A blade length or nominal force figure does not by itself establish what a particular machine can cut repeatedly. Request a model-specific cut envelope and any material assumptions behind it.
Compare loading and staffing
Observe how scrap will be placed at the machine and removed after cutting. The available excavator, sorting practice, operator position and safety perimeter may shape the answer as much as the nominal machine size. Ask how feed control, hold-down and discharge are handled on the proposed model.
Plan for maintenance access
Blade inspection, reversal or replacement, lubrication and hydraulic checks need clear access. Include space for service as well as for the machine itself. Obtain the model manual and guarding details before fixing the yard layout.
