How to Calculate Scrap Baler Throughput

Short answer: estimate scrap baler throughput by multiplying the number of completed bales per productive hour by the measured average bale weight. Keep loading, compression, discharge and operating interruptions in the calculation. A cycle-time claim by itself is not a complete production estimate.

The basic throughput calculation

Use three values:

  • Average complete cycle time in seconds
  • Average bale weight from the actual material stream
  • Operating utilization for loading delays, sorting, adjustments and routine stops

Theoretical bales per hour equal 3,600 divided by the complete cycle time in seconds. Estimated production throughput then equals theoretical bales per hour multiplied by average bale weight and the expected utilization factor.

Example method: if a verified complete cycle takes 90 seconds, the theoretical rate is 40 bales per hour. If measured bales average 180 kg and the planned utilization factor is 0.75, the planning estimate is 40 × 180 × 0.75 = 5,400 kg per hour. This is an illustration of the calculation method, not a performance claim for a Nanyuan machine.

Use a complete cycle time

Confirm where the timer starts and stops. A hydraulic movement time may exclude material loading, chamber filling, lid movement, repeated compression strokes, bale discharge and the operator’s next setup. For planning, time the full repeated process from one comparable starting condition to the next.

Record several consecutive cycles rather than selecting the fastest one. Note any oversized pieces, bridging, manual adjustment or feed interruption. The average and the range are both useful when comparing a proposed machine with the yard’s operating schedule.

Measure bale weight with representative material

Bale weight changes with material type, sheet thickness, shape, contamination, moisture, chamber filling and compression sequence. A nominal bale dimension does not guarantee one weight for every scrap stream.

For a useful estimate, weigh multiple bales produced from material that represents normal production. Keep different material groups separate. If the yard processes light sheet, mixed profiles and heavier offcuts, calculate a planning range for each group instead of applying one average to all feed.

Apply a realistic utilization factor

A machine is not normally compressing material during every second of a shift. The production plan should allow for loader travel, material sorting, chamber preparation, bale removal, operator checks, blade or wire tasks where applicable, routine maintenance and shift changes.

Use site records when available. If no historical factor exists, model more than one scenario and label each assumption. This shows whether the required daily output depends on an optimistic loading rhythm or still works under a more conservative operating pattern.

Convert hourly output into a shift target

Multiply estimated productive throughput by scheduled operating hours, then account separately for planned breaks and maintenance. Keep tonnes processed, number of bales and operating time as separate fields. This makes it easier to identify whether a shortfall comes from bale weight, cycle duration or lost operating time.

Also check the equipment around the baler. A loader, conveyor, sorting station or bale-removal route can limit the line before the hydraulic press reaches its own cycle limit.

Compare supplier estimates on the same basis

Send each supplier the same material photos, regular and maximum feed dimensions, target bale size, loading method, shift pattern and required output. Ask each supplier to identify:

  • The full cycle definition used for the estimate
  • The material and bale weight assumptions
  • The number of operators and loading equipment assumed
  • Whether the figure is theoretical, tested or estimated
  • The conditions that should be verified in a material trial

Review the scrap metal baler range, read the hydraulic scrap metal baler buyer guide and use the hydraulic baler RFQ checklist. Send your material and shift target for a model-specific discussion.
