Short answer: choose a hydraulic scrap shear by matching the material envelope, required cut, feeding method and yard workflow to a documented machine configuration. Press force alone does not show whether a shear will accept the largest regular piece, deliver the required cut or fit the loading and maintenance space available at the site.
1. Describe the material before comparing machines
Start with the scrap that arrives regularly, then record the difficult pieces that appear occasionally. List beams, profiles, pipe, plate, bundles and mixed structural scrap separately. For each group, note the material grade when known, typical dimensions, maximum cross-section, longest piece and condition. Photos should include a scale or a known reference.
Do not describe the feed only as light, medium or heavy scrap. Those labels can mean different things to different suppliers. A practical material brief helps the manufacturer assess the feed opening, hold-down arrangement, blade length and loading route without assuming that every piece has the same shape.
2. Define the required outgoing cut
State the target cut length and explain what happens after cutting. The receiving furnace, downstream processor, buyer or transport container may set the useful output size. If the yard needs two output conditions, record both and identify which one is the normal production target.
Ask how the proposed shear controls the material before and during the cut. The feed box or table, hold-down system, blade arrangement and discharge path all affect handling. Request a current drawing and confirm the assumptions behind any stated cut result.
3. Compare the main shear configurations
A gantry shear can suit a yard that organizes bulky stock around a fixed loading and cutting area. A container shear combines feed containment and cutting in a different layout. Other hydraulic scrap shear configurations may use a press box or an open feed arrangement. The names alone do not establish capacity or suitability.
Compare each option using the same material list and site sketch. Review:
- Maximum regular feed dimensions and difficult cross-sections
- Feed opening, blade length and hold-down arrangement
- Loader or excavator approach and operator sightlines
- Cut material discharge and downstream handling
- Foundation, electrical supply and hydraulic layout
- Blade service, inspection points and maintenance clearance
4. Treat throughput as a test condition
A throughput figure is useful only when its conditions are clear. Material shape, density, loading skill, pre-sorting, cut length and interruptions can change the result. Ask the supplier what material, feed size, operating sequence and measurement period support the quoted estimate.
For a meaningful comparison, give every supplier the same feed description and required output. Separate confirmed values from estimates and request a material test when the project depends on a narrow production target.
5. Check the complete site workflow
Draw the movement from incoming stock to the feed area, through the shear and into the outgoing pile or container. Mark loader travel, operator access, maintenance zones, electrical connection, drainage considerations and the equipment delivery route. A machine that fits on a foundation drawing can still create an inefficient yard if stock and cut material cross the same traffic path.
Confirm who supplies the foundation information, electrical interface, hydraulic oil, lifting equipment, commissioning support and operator training. These items should be visible in the quotation scope rather than left to assumptions after delivery.
6. Send a complete request for quotation
A useful RFQ includes material photos, normal and maximum dimensions, target cut, expected operating schedule, loading equipment, site plan, destination country and electrical standard. Ask for the proposed model, current drawing, included components, test assumptions, installation boundary, recommended spare parts and service plan.
