Short answer: compare a hydraulic scrap shear and a gantry shear through the feed route and cut target first. A gantry shear suits a yard that can organize bulky stock and loader access around the machine; a contained or container shear may suit a more defined feed arrangement. The correct choice depends on the material and site workflow.
Describe the material stream
List beams, profiles, pipes, sheet, bundles and mixed bulky pieces separately. Record the longest regular piece, the largest section, the material grades and any stock that requires pre-cutting. Photos with a scale help a supplier understand the real feed better than a product name alone.
Define the outgoing cut
State the length or section target required by the next process, buyer or transport route. If the yard needs more than one output condition, describe each one. Ask how feed control, hold-down and discharge support the target and which conditions were used for any quoted estimate.
Compare the site workflow
- Loader or excavator reach from stockpile to feed area
- Operator sightlines and safe working zone
- Stock separation before cutting and after discharge
- Clearance for maintenance and blade service
- Electrical supply, foundation and delivery route
When to request a comparison quote
Send the same material photos, regular dimensions, cut target and site sketch for both configurations. Compare the proposed loading route, service access, installation scope and test assumptions. This gives the scrap yard a practical basis for choosing a hydraulic gantry shear, container shear or another hydraulic scrap shear configuration.
Review the gantry shear range, compare container shears and read the gantry metal cutting machine guide. Send material photos and cut targets for a model-specific discussion.
