Metal chips and turnings are not the same feed as larger scrap offcuts. This distinction often determines whether a briquetting press or a scrap metal baler belongs on the shortlist.
Match the machine to the feed form
A briquetting press is designed to densify suitable small particles, chips or turnings into briquettes. A baler compresses compatible loose scrap into a bale. A pile may contain both forms, but that does not mean one machine should process both. Record the metal grade, chip shape, particle size, moisture and any mixed materials before asking for a recommendation.
Ask what the downstream buyer wants
Confirm the output format, handling method and quality requirements with the receiving processor. Dense briquettes can offer a different handling route from large bales. The value of either output depends on the material and the buyer’s process, so do not assume a recovery or price improvement without a trial or buyer confirmation.
Consider fluid and contamination
Machining chips may carry cutting fluid, fines or tramp material. These affect feed behavior, cleanliness and the equipment system around the press. Ask whether separation, screening or fluid management is needed. The supplier should assess a representative sample rather than estimating solely from a material label.
Build a useful test brief
- Metal type and whether grades are mixed
- Chip or turning form, photos and approximate size distribution
- Fluid content and contaminants
- Expected input per shift
- Preferred briquette or bale handling method
