A scrap yard choosing between a container shear and a gantry shear should begin with a simple process drawing. Both are hydraulic shearing routes, but the feed path, material containment and space around the machine can differ substantially by model.
Draw the flow before comparing brochures
Show where incoming scrap is stored, how it is sorted, which machine loads it, and where cut material lands. Include vehicle routes and a safe zone for operators and maintenance. A layout that gives the shear enough physical space may still fail if the loader cannot turn or the discharge blocks the next truck.
Describe how material arrives
Container-style arrangements are often evaluated where a defined feed chamber is useful for managing loose or bulky material. Gantry arrangements may be evaluated for another feed and hold-down workflow. Those are starting descriptions, not guarantees of capacity or suitability. Ask the supplier to review representative photos and the maximum dimensions of each material class.
Check the output route
Specify the target cut length, whether grades need separation, and how the cut pieces will be collected. If the receiver imposes size limits, record them in writing. Blade geometry, hold-down configuration and operating sequence should be assessed against this target.

- Available electrical supply and any local voltage requirement
- Foundations or civil works specified by the selected model
- Loader reach and working clearance
- Drainage, environmental controls and service access
- Transport route for delivery and installation
